Historic Hillyard Unraveled

By Gage Olson and Zach Trejo, Shaw Middle School Students

Hillyard – Students of Ms.Hilbush’s class from Shaw middle School went to Downtown Hillyard to link the past to the present. On May 31, 2007. Their mission was to show how Hillyard has changed over time.
Their first stop on the trip was the Martindale Apartments (the old Hillyard High). Hillyard High had changed locations from the top floor of the original Regal Elementary. The final location of a new high school was Rogers High School in 1933. The students also learned that the Martindale Apartments is not a very good place to live.

Next stop on the mission to victory was the pilot book store. Where they got many answers, such as what Jim Hill said “If you give me enough whiskey and Swedes and I’ll build a railroad to hell.” Zach Trejo had to do twenty push ups for answering a question wrong, which meant the owner really cared about their learning. Students also learned they were in the former Hillyard Laundry building begun by the Shiosaki family around 1909.

Next, while they were fighting for answers, they stopped at the Hillyard Florist. Many questions were answered there, which are as: where was the original Safeway building? on what streets was the original JC Penny’s located?

The store owner answered enthusiastically, “Aunt Bee’s was the old Safeway and JC Penny’s was located on Diamond and Market.” When they left they were rewarded with a postcard from the 1930’s.

The final stop was Ken’s Barber Shop where students figured out who the “Hillyard Hammer” was, the location of the Caraben Commercial Company, and that the “Hillyard Hammer” was Chauncy Welliver, a boxer.
As you can see Shaw students have unraveled Hillyard’s past, by getting their questions answered and working hard!
