Historic Hillyard Unraveled By Gage Olson and Zach Trejo, Shaw Middle School Students Hillyard – Students
of Ms.Hilbush’s class from Shaw middle School went to Downtown Hillyard
to link the past to the present. On May 31, 2007. Their mission was to
show how Hillyard has changed over time. Next stop on the
mission to victory was the pilot book store. Where they got many
answers, such as what Jim Hill said “If you give me enough whiskey and
Swedes and I’ll build a railroad to hell.” Zach Trejo had to do twenty
push ups for answering a question wrong, which meant the owner really
Next, while they were fighting for answers, they stopped at the Hillyard Florist.Many questions were answered there, which are as: where was the original Safeway building? on what streets was the original JC Penny’s located? The store owner answered enthusiastically, “Aunt Bee’s was the old Safeway and JC Penny’s was located on Diamond and Market.” When they left they were rewarded with a postcard from the 1930’s. The final stop was
Ken’s Barber Shop where students figured out who the “Hillyard Hammer”
was, the location of the Caraben Commercial Company, and that the
“Hillyard Hammer” was Chauncy Welliver, a boxer. |
