Happy New Year, and welcome to the new Hillyard. Things are changing, from attitudes, to new storefronts, to new businesses in the industrial park, and our new Mayor and our changing city council. Why do we say new? Every neighborhood has neighborhood planning dollars. That means that Hillyard, Bemiss, Whitman, Minnehaha, Nevada-Lidgerwood, and yes even Morgan Acres will work together, pool our resources and officially document what we want our neighborhood to look like and how we want it to grow. In a lot of ways, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We can pool our planning information to meld our collective thoughts to marry the City’s and County’s plans, the Bigalow Gulch improvements and the North South Corridor, etc. We will use neighborhood planning to reflect on a historic past that made Spokane a dynamic diamond. Hillyard will return to its former splendor. It will be a destination, a planned community that offers history, housing, shopping and industry all within walking distance of each other. That’s in the near (and distant) future, what about right now? We have 22,000 cars and trucks driving through historic Hillyard every month. Thanks to our new driver feedback signs, we are slowing them down to 20mph on Market and we are taking advantage of the situation. We have banner space for advertising our events draped over the thoroughfare. Let’s use this opportunity to further EDUCATE our driving public what Hillyard has to offer. How many times has your business or organization heard, “I didn’t even know this was going on?” We can change that. The Great Hillyard Business Association is working together with local businesses to maintain a constant presence over Market Street. Thank you to our past sponsors, Country Homes Realty and American Family Insurance. The schedule of 2008 banner space is quickly being allocated. Hillyard, step up and tell the Greater Hillyard Business Association how we need to publicize our community. What are our advertising priorities? Please let us know on our Community Forum. You too can get involved as a sponsor, a business or an organization. SOME EVENTS ALREADY SLATED FOR 2008:
