Hillyard HighNote

The Hillyard HighNote at 5022 N Market St. is Hillyard's own hole-in-the-wall ice cream and hot dog joint. Don't expect fancy inside seating or a huge menu, but what you will find is some pretty tasty ice cream and three kinds of delicious dogs. You'll "relish the flavor" of regular dogs, beer brats and smoked Polish sausage. Along with cones, you'll find shakes and floats made from hard ice cream, fountain soda pop and coffee. The shoppe is complete with a working 1960's era juke-box packed with old 45's.

Owner and operator, Tom Herrmann, stated that he spent much of his childhood growing up in the Minnehaha area south of Hillyard. "As a kid, I was very familiar with Hillyard in the 1950's. I spent many a summer day swimming at the Hillyard pool and shopping the Hillyard stores with my family." he said. Herrmann, a retired teacher from Central Valley School District, said he started the business for fun. He said, "It's not like I have to try to make a living from it. I have just enjoyed the challenge of getting the business up and running, and now that it is, meeting and talking to the locals and the shoppers who stop in. When it's not fun anymore, I'll sell or close it down." Days and hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm.
