No Parking
by Karen Tuininga
The Spokane Parks
Department is a revered 100 year old entity, in
and of itself, evidenced by
dozens
of public parks and pools in and around the
city. "Public: adj. done, made, acting, etc. for
the community as a whole."

The Five
People You Meet in Heaven
by
Mitch Albom
If you’ll
remember, I christened my book reviews with Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays
with Morrie which was based on a true story of a time in Albom’s
life. It was a very touching and moving story of one of Albom’s
professors who died of Lou Gherigs disease. So when I happened to come
across Five People You Meet in Heaven, also by Albom, I did not
hesitate to read it. And read it I did; it only took me three hours from
beginning to end.

Downtown Revitalization
Project
For more years than I care to count, the
Hillyard community has launched many
efforts to update, clean up and
revitalize their community. Most people
who have been through Hillyard in the
last twenty plus years would agree it's
a daunting task. Since the railroad
pulled out in the early 1980’s nothing
much has changed – retail shops come and
go, restaurants struggle and the public
service entities move to more thriving
neighborhoods. Time has left its mark;
the narrow sidewalks are in disrepair
and lighting is insufficient for any
feeling of safety in the evening hours.
In addition, Market Street, a major
north/south truck route, runs directly
through the business district. The
posted 20mph peed limit is virtually
ignored, making pedestrian traffic and
retail shopping nearly impossible.

Market Street Market
Third Season
Activities abound at Market Street Market, open for
our third season. If I may say, what a long strange
trip it's been! Along the way we have evolved into
something rather more, and definitely better, than
anything we envisioned.

A lot of surprises have come our way, some difficult
to get past. Great partners and community support
have helped enable M.S.M. to live and breath. The
third time is the charm, as they say, and many
changes are coming to Market Street Market.
