Talkin' Trash
by Karen Tuininga
Have you
ever noticed them? You know what I'm talking about.
When you're driving, biking or walking, all of those lovingly placed concrete trash
receptacles along the Historic Hillyard business
core? If you have, there's no doubt that you also
noticed that they are stuffed to maximum overload
and beyond.

The good news? They ARE being used and this
tells us that the hoofing and pedaling public is
trying to do the right thing. The bummer here is
that these garbage cans didn't come equipped with
one of those nifty trap doors. You know, the one in
the bottom that springs open when the can is full
and drops the contents into a black hole for trash,
never to be seen again. Not around here, anyway. Our
beautiful
planter boxes don't have trap doors, either.
So, we're just going to have to do it
ourselves. With that said, we'll move right on to "Who Is
Actually
Responsible?" Well... truth be told, we all are. Conventional
wisdom might lean toward responsibility according to
proximity. But the biggest conglomerations of
clutter are the cans located by vacant buildings.
Who is willing to become the non-existent brothers
keeper? Garland?... Help us out here.

Business on Track...
HOWE’S AUTO SERVICE
4904 N. Market Street
Hillyard, Washington
(509) 701-2658
Howe’s
Auto Service is a husband and wife run shop. Lee comes to
us from Libby, Montana and Patty from right here in
Hillyard. Lee attended Spokane Community
College's Automotive Program and has been in the
professional auto repair industry since his
graduation in 1981. Patty graduated from John
R. Rogers High School in 1980. They were
married in Hillyard twenty-three years ago.
Patty started working behind automotive service
counters in 1989. Lee and Patty also have a
family hobby of restoring antique cars.
After
working In larger facilities for many years Lee and Patty decided to
open their own shop. Their preferred location was Hillyard and
in September 2002, opened their first shop on Everett Avenue, east
of Freya Street. In July 2004 the opportunity to relocate to Market
Street came about, and now Howe’s Auto Service is in downtown
Hillyard. |
