Block Watch Block Party BBQ
by Mike Rapp

The Hillyard neighborhood my wife and I moved 'into' six years ago seemed like many others around town. It didn't take long to make friends with several of the neighbors. We also had a few problems develop over time that our local COPS shop helped us solve. They also recommended that we form a Neighborhood Block Watch network, which in the past several years has helped develop even more friendships in our little neighborhood. Interesting enough one of the newest homeowners suggested having a barbecue. I thought the idea sounded fun and as the Block Watch representative, I contacted the neighbors. Four days later we had an awesome barbecue attended by over 20 people. Some of these people are pictured. They include longtime residents like Zella Graham, Charlie and Darlene Laird and Earl and Joyce Schmidt. Since it went so well, we are considering a winter gathering. Even though the nice weather is escaping us, I urge you to get your neighbors together for some social activity and consider forming your own Neighborhood Block Watch.

For more information on Block Watches, call or visit your neighborhood COPS Shop (5208 N Market, 625-3343 in Hillyard, Bemis, Whitman & Minnehaha) or read more on the Spokane Police Department website: http://www.spokanepolice.org/blockwatch.htm
