Historic Hillyard
Business District Hillyard’s holiday festival has low-cost fun for all Spokane, wa, November 29, 2008: Maybe it’s a sign of the times: the 2008 Hillyard Festival starts this weekend in a bank that’s been closed for decades. In 2006 & 2007, Hillyard’s close-knit community organizations took over the 7-year-old Holiday Festival, setting up in a different, vacant Historic District building every year. As a unique way to publicize the event, the 2008 Festival’s main activities will happen in the old US Bank Building at 5101 North Market. “The idea is to help link local families with resident businesses and to stretch holiday shopping dollars,” says Desi Bucknell, last year’s Festival Association president. “The really big deal for the kids is getting their picture with Santa.” Moms and Dads appreciate that the Kiwanis photo studio only charges $5 for the traditional photos. The Hillyard Holiday Festival operates from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM the next two weekends, 6 & 7 and 13 & 14 December. Notable features at this year’s festival include the popular Kiwanis photo project, where kids and anyone else (yes, even pets) can get an affordable picture with Santa at Hillyard’s North Pole, taken and developed on-the-spot. NE community vendors will be in the bank to offer low-cost gifts for holiday shoppers. The yearly retailers’ decorations contest up and down Market and Haven Streets garners a $100 cash prize with bragging rights and a winner ‘s trophy. Gift bargains are featured in most of Hillyard’s local businesses. Special Community Design Display. For three years architecture and design students and NE District groups and residents have worked on new design ideas for the future of the area. This year, students from the WSU Riverfront Campus’ Interdisciplinary Design Institute (IDI) will display fourteen new. concept projects for public comment. Beginning at 1:00 PM Saturday, December 6th, students will present their work, how they developed the various ideas with local residents’ and businesses’ help, and what applications might look like in redeveloping Greater Hillyard. Dr. Bob Scarfo, IDI professor and Hillyard volunteer, coordinated “service-learning” projects in Hillyard for several years. “Hillyard’s cooperation between organizations, residents and the University is becoming a model for sustainable and cooperative projects across the region. These students continue a ‘recent tradition’ that we’d like to see become a long-term relationship.” A joint venture of the Hillyard Kiwanis Club, Hillyard’s Festival Association, the Greater Hillyard Business Association and volunteers from other community groups, the Holiday Festival helps build community efforts to unify and organize the community around civic projects. David Griswold, Chair of the Hillyard-Bemiss-Whitman Steering Committee, believes “The Holiday Festival is just one of four community events in the area that bring our neighbors together as a community,” he says. “In only a few years, the Chalk Art Walk, the Hillyard Parade & Festival, Girls’ Day Out and the Holiday Festival have made a huge difference in uniting the NE neighborhoods.” John Bogensberger, President of the Greater Hillyard Business Association, sees other advantages. “The Holiday Festival in Hillyard is just a lot of good fun, especially for kids and Christmas shoppers. When we started a few years ago, the idea was ‘Do it even if we make mistakes—-we can fix them the next time.’ “Lots of mistakes later, the Festival Committee has volunteer teams to set up, run it and clean up. I think it’s a great model for all Spokane neighborhoods.” Held the first two weekends in December, this year’s festival will operate from 11:00-6:00PM at the corner of North Market Street and Queen Avenue in downtown historic Hillyard. Everyone’s invited. --END-- The Hillyard Neighborhood Celebrates the Holiday Season with the 2008 Hillyard Holiday Festival at the Hillyard North Pole! For the first two weekends in December Santa makes his home at 5101 N Market St! Hillyard Neighborhood, Spokane, WA, December 1, 2008: Once again the Hillyard Festival Association, Greater Hillyard Business Association, Hillyard Kiwanis and many other neighborhood volunteers have come together to celebrate Christmas in our historic neighborhood on Saturday and Sunday, December 6th & 7th and 13th & 14th. Included in the festivities at the Hillyard North Pole (5101 N Market St, Old U.S. Bank Building) this year are $5 printed-while-you-wait pictures with Santa Claus, many craft and gift vendors, holiday treats and getting to know your neighbors; doors will open at 11am and go until 6pm. They’ll also be selling those collectable Hillyard Holiday Festival sweatshirts. Proceeds from the event benefit our local neighborhood non-profit organizations, but the biggest benefit is building community and getting out into your neighborhood business district. Outside, along historic Market Street the businesses will be participating in our annual decorations contest. O’Brien’s Used Furniture has won two years and counting, come and see what the contenders have to offer! As always our shops will have many holiday specials on great gifts and decorations. On Saturday, Dec. 6th from 9am – 4pm, COPS Northeast will be having their Country & Kiddie Christmas Store at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N Cook St, and on Sunday, Dec 7th the Hillyard VFW Ladies Auxiliary will have their Christmas Bazaar starting at noon at the Post, 2902 E Diamond. This year, at 1pm on Saturday Dec. 6th, on the lower level of the Hillyard North Pole WSU’s Interdisciplinary Design Studio will be showcasing their work from this term, designs for the future of Hillyard. Come support the students and give your feedback on their designs. Also, don’t forget to stop by the Kid’s Christmas in Hillyard booth and say hello to Clyde, Hillyard’s own Santa. He spends all year raising funds and collecting toys to distribute to the parents who need them most in the Hillyard Neighborhood. Those needing toys can stop by the C.H.A.S. clinic at the Northeast Community Center or those who want to give can donate money to the “Santa Fund” at the Hillyard Bank of America Branch. Special thanks go out to Darryl Reber for allowing the neighborhood to use the old U.S. Bank building for our Hillyard North Pole this year. We are all very excited about his Market Street Station project and are proud of the relationship the neighborhood has built with this developer. The Hillyard Holiday Festival is an annual event that represents an ever growing spirit of cooperation among Hillyard’s neighborhood organizations and a commitment to build community in our neighborhood, for the betterment of all. Come visit us! We would appreciate your help in spreading the word about this wonderful event. Thank you. ## END ##
