Bench Design Winner Announced

At the HHP Open House on Thursday, February 2nd, Christopher Lee was presented with the first place award for his winning bench design. In a partnership between the Technical Design Class at the Spokane School District Skill Center and the Historic Hillyard Partnership, students were asked to design benches that will ultimately be placed in the Historic Hillyard District as the community moves forward with revitalization plans.

The students were asked to design benches that would depict the Hillyard railroad legacy, by utilizing rail parts and/or a railroad theme.  The four winning designs were chosen from more than 30 submitted by the Technical Design Class, under the direction of Terri Haworth, Graphic Communications Technical instructor. The top 12 designs were displayed at different community events throughout November and December, with the final vote taking place at the Hillyard Holiday Celebration on December 3rd.  The top 4 designs are shown below.

Now that the designs have been chosen, the Metal Shop class at Spokane Skill Center will attempt to secure the necessary parts and materials to make the designs a reality.  According to Terri Haworth, the graphic design students will be able to work closely with the metal shop students to help keep their design inspiration an integral part of the build process.

A lot of research and parts gathering starts now. If you would like more information or if you would like to help with this project, please contact Donna Fagan at 475-2180 or at DonnaMarieFitz@hotmail.com.
