June 4th is the
annual ChalkArtWalk put on by the Hillyard Festival Association. For
the 8th year now, the streets of Hillyard’s retail core will
be filled with chalk artists young and old decorating our neighborhood’s
sidewalks with chalk art. Registration begins at 10 am on Saturday
morning at Market & Diamond in the bank parking lot at the ChalkArtWalk
booth. The HFA will be providing chalk and hairspray fixative. This
event is completely free and open to the public. The first 100
participants will get free full color ChalkArtWalk t-shirts featuring
last years best of show winner. This year’s theme is “Dream.” All
entries will reflect this theme, in which ever ways the artists interpret
it.
Prizes will be awarded for
first, second, and third place to artists from five age categories, as
well as a best of show. Each year the best of show winner has their
design put on the next year’s t-shirts. Artists will draw until 3:00
pm at
which point they will be judged by an assortment of renowned individuals
including Steve Corker prominent Spokanite, Tom Petaello art teacher at
Rogers High School, Vincent De Felice of North by Northwest Productions
and the Galleria De Felice inside the Davenport Hotel and others. After
the judging and the live entertainment finishes there will be a
presentation to the wining artists.
It’s not just artists
though. As in years before, various vendors from inside and outside
Hillyard will be selling their wares and exhibiting their
organizations. These will include food vendors. There is still time to
sign up to be a vendor. Prices are $15, $20 for food vendors and
non-profit organizations are welcome to dispense their information for
free. Please contact Desi Bucknell, Hillyard Festival Association
Chairperson at
wizard8544@msn.com or 489-1122, to sign up. Any and all
vendors are welcome. This and all Hillyard Festival events would not be
possible without vendors and sponsors paying the way. The Hillyard
Festival would like to thank all of its sponsors and encourage you to
support the vendors. For more info on HFA sponsors, keep your eye out
for the Hillyard Festival Gazette to be printed this summer, and
available at many Hillyard businesses.
This year the participants
will also enjoy live entertainment from 11:30 am until 3:00 pm. Bob
Kinyon from Market Street Market’s New Groove venue has been working
with the Hillyard Festival Association to bring 5 different artists to
the ChalkArtWalk and many more to the Hillyard Festival in August. The
music artists will perform on the grassy area behind the train next to
the Alaskan Lounge on Market and Diamond.
Please come down and
support Hillyard, the Hillyard Festival Association and all the artists,
it’s sure to be a fun time. If you would like more information on this
and other Hillyard Festival events, please attend an HFA meeting. They
are held Tuesday nights, 6:30 pm at the Northeast Community Center. All
are welcome.
