Recap:

With the early heat-wave and competition from a number of other events around town this weekend, Hillyard's ChalkArtWalk still drew 128 artists.

Though the number of participants willing to sit out in the hot sun was down a little, the quality of the artwork was way up, as was the number of teenagers and young adults participating. Judges had to break a tie for "Best of Show" between two teenagers in the 11-15 and 16-20 year old age groups.  Both young men were judged with higher scores than previous "Best of Show" winners drawing in the adult category, Bill Blair and Sara Van Camp, who placed first and second in this years adult category.

Upon re-evaluating both teens artwork, judges Senator Chris Marr, Commissioner Bonnie Mager and Councilwoman Mary Verner awarded "Best of Show" to fourteen year old Jonathan Rooney of Spokane.  Jonathan drew a memorial portrait of his friend and hero USMC Lance Corporal Nicholas Bloem.  Bloem died in Iraq on August 3, 2005, one day after his twentieth birthday.  (Click here for more information on Cpl. Bloem)

Best of Show Winner by Johnathan Rooney

Jonathan received $100 and gets a custom framed photo of his artwork.  But, the real prize for Jonathan is that his artwork will be showcased on next years T-shirt, guaranteeing his friend and hero Nicholas will be remembered.

The Hillyard Festival Association hopes everyone had fun and enjoyed the art, music and Hillyard pride in the downtown Hillyard business core and would like to thank their volunteers and supporters for making this all possible: ACES E-Z-Go, Cliff’s Quality Auto, Country Homes Reality, Guardian Self Storage, Howe’s Auto Service, Signs for Success and Sterling Savings Bank.

Special thanks to a new sponsor this year!

Entertainment:

Sean Saugen opened with his acoustic guitar and solo vocal set.  He also accompanied himself with his own background music via a synthesized loop machine which enables him to overlay his own rhythmical and backup sounds and then play his solo work over the top.  He has completed his own EP CD titled 'Watching the Paint Dry'. Sean embarked with his own artistic evolution and tried his hand on his first ever attempt at putting chalk on the sidewalk.

Shane Evans played the second set.  He too is an accomplished local musician that has played many of the all ages stages in and around Spokane.  Shane is looking forward to recording his very first EP CD some time this summer with one of the local recording studios.  We extend our greatest gratitude to Shane for filling in at the last moment and entertaining with his great ability.

The third group was 'The Nightfly' from Lewis & Clark High School, and their front man is from Whitworth college.  This band has some of the most talented individual artistic musicians in the local Spokane scene.  Their contemporary Blues/Jazz style is easy to listen too and very rhythmically solid.  These 4 young men can lay down a solid thematic idea and then just sit back and let their magic work as the theme just keeps developing and building to an ambitious pulsation of rhythmical phrases.  They are looking forward to traveling to Seattle this summer where they will be recording their first CD with Delve Studios.

The entertainment for this event ended with the Rogers High School Steel Percussion Ensemble.  A very talented group of 15 accomplished percussionists with mallets in hand provided a full hour of soothing metal drum sounds emulating from the small park in downtown Hillyard.  Some of these students have been with the ensemble for 3 years.  Their director, Ron Crenshaw, has directed these students with technical and disciplined styles to allow the students to entertain without the assistance of a director throughout the entire program.  It is impressive to see all of the students rotating  through the full range of steel drums to engage all of the ranges from the bass 50 gallon drums to the cut down 8 pitched drums.  They will be performing their last show together at the Rogers 2007 graduation ceremony.

To ALL of the very talented musicians, a HUGE THANK YOU from the Hillyard Festival Association for entertaining the chalk artists while they work diligently on their concrete canvases, and too all the local vendors and support personnel that enjoyed your talents throughout the very sunny day in downtown Hillyard.

The Hillyard Festival Association would like to thank Audio Roadrunner for providing the sound system and crew.
