EDITOR'S COMMENTARY

No Parking
by Karen Tuininga

The Spokane Parks Department is a revered 100 year old entity, in and of itself, evidenced by dozens of public parks and pools in and around the city. "Public: adj. done, made, acting, etc. for the community as a whole."

City budget cuts are widespread and do affect the parks departments' percentage budget. But, honestly, I do not recollect reading or hearing about any direct cuts involving them. What I do see are grandiose plans for new parks in limited influential locations. Irregardless, by definition, the decision to charge non-profits exorbitant prices to hold festivals and fund-raisers in public parks is far afield from a solution of any significance... Except that the efforts of entire communities might easily be stifled, or extinguished, as a result.

No parking.

Editorial Comments do not necessarily portray the views of Historic-Hillyard.com.  The aim of this column is to inspire, embrace, and query our reading public.  Hillyard, like all neighborhood communities, has general issues as well as issues specific to this community. It's easy to talk about what's right and good with our neighborhood, it's leaders and general public, but it takes a bold stance to voice and bring to the forefront those negative and not so good issues of the same.

We encourage any and all responses to our Editorial Commentaries.  You may either submit an email to EditorialResponse@Historic-Hillyard.com or start a discussion in the Forum.
