EDITOR'S COMMENTARY

The Hillyard Approach...
by Karen Tuininga

Hillyard is truly a town within a town. Hillyard train yards made possible the building of the town that it is within. Hillyard thrived on the back of the laborer. Men of coal, brick, and steel who left behind a seedbed of community.

Hillyard is the natural consistency of the evolution of lifers and converts who are willing to help each other, fame and fortune be damned, for the sake of seeing the positive happen on the home turf. Motivations vary... Friendship, honor, family ties, debt, connections/reconnections... Whatever. A stable network of good will with a common goal and a clear identity has been established here.

Hillyard is alive. The cycle of dormancy has come to its end, the pulse is quickening and the vitality is growing. The Hillyard approach is a choir of hearts and souls from all around giving voice to the future.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Editorial Comments do not necessarily portray the views of Historic-Hillyard.com.  The aim of this column is to inspire, embrace, and query our reading public.  Hillyard, like all neighborhood communities, has general issues as well as issues specific to this community. It's easy to talk about what's right and good with our neighborhood, it's leaders and general public, but it takes a bold stance to voice and bring to the forefront those negative and not so good issues of the same.

We encourage any and all responses to our Editorial Commentaries.  You may either submit an email to EditorialResponse@Historic-Hillyard.com or start a discussion in the Forum.
